What you're reading as defiance is actually information
I want to tell you about a moment that changed everything for my youngest son.
We were at a playdate. I asked him to play with the other children. He said yes. But then he resisted. He wanted to play on his own terms, in his own timing, with his own choices about what came next.
I used to read that as defiance. Stubbornness. Not listening.
But one day it clicked...he wasn't being difficult. He was being entrepreneurial.
He needed autonomy. He needed choices. He needed agency in what was happening.
The moment I understood that, I stopped seeing his behaviour as a problem. I started seeing it as information. A signal about how he's actually wired.
Here's what changed..I stopped trying to force compliance. I started offering choices. And the resistance dropped.
This is the real shift that happens when you understand your strong-willed child's core motivations.
Behaviour is never the problem. Behaviour is the signal.
Your job is to decode it.
I've written about this in detail on my blog — how to recognise what your child's behaviour is actually telling you, and what to do instead of the strategies that haven't worked.

The moment you start reading behaviour as information instead of defiance, your relationship with your child transforms.
P.S. If you're ready to decode your strong-willed toddler and understand exactly what to do in real-life scenarios (mealtime battles, getting dressed, car seats, bedtime chaos), I've created 30 Days to Less Toddler Tantrums. It's here: www.dinacooper.com.au/toddler
