My second son was born ten years ago. In the post-natal ward, the nurses frequently commented, he chirps like a bird when he cries. He had his own unique personality as soon as he was born..

He (or she) is determined to do the things that annoy you, again and again, and AGAIN. He can be the sweetest child in one moment and his passion for something he likes to do is contagious. Then there’s this side to him that can’t stop taking a game too far with his sister, to the point where she ends up in tears.

What happens when your goals for your child and their goals for themselves differ?

The myth and legend says that slow and steady wins the race, yet in recent years the world around us has been speeding up. Faster cars, faster trains, faster planes, faster internet, faster food, faster learning and the list goes on.

Leading a team or leading a child is never just a sit down for an hour a week affair.  More often than not it is leading in each interaction, in each situation and in each moment. Sometimes as little as 1-2 minutes at a time. The cumulative effect of these minutes is what I refer to as building a relationship in the time in-between or leading in the cracks..

Do you celebrate mistakes?

We want children to walk their own path. We want them to not compare themselves to others. Mostly we want them to be proud of who they are no matter what. But I’m wondering if what we say to them sometimes gives them a different message.
