Should You Limit Screen Time for Your Kids? What a Digital Detox Expert Says

Parenting in the digital world… it’s messy, layered, and full of conflicting thoughts, feelings, and emotions — especially when it comes to screen time.

I know I’m guilty of being on my phone too often, and that familiar pang of guilt hits when I catch myself scrolling instead of being fully present with my kids. They “catch” me sometimes, mid-scroll, and it’s in those moments I realise just how easily distracted I can be. Screens can feel like a lifeline after a long day… but the cost is often connection.

What I’m noticing more and more is this: the more distracted I am, the more disconnected they become. They listen less… they want to use tech more… and our moments of real engagement shrink.

But here’s the thing — I’m not against screens. Technology is deeply woven into our lives. For many of us, it’s essential for work… and for some, access to online resources can even be lifesaving. I’m not interested in ditching devices entirely.

Instead, maybe the key is balance — conscious, compassionate boundaries around screen use that honour both connection and modern life.

To explore this further, I recently had a powerful conversation with Mandie Spooner from Digital Detox – Be a Present Parent. Mandie shares practical ways we can find that balance — and why it matters so much for our kids’ development… and our own wellbeing as parents.

If you’ve been feeling the tug between screen time and presence, you’ll find so much clarity in this conversation.
